Professional Organizations

The Council of Exceptional Children provides resources for parents, teachers, students, providers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and related services professionals for the purpose of improving the success of individuals birth to adulthood with disabilities and/or those who are gifted.  Being the largest international professional organization for those in special education, my students use CEC’s two main journals as their textbook.  We have an active CEC student chapter, the LU SCEC, on campus and attend the state and national conferences.

The Division of Early Children (DEC), a division of The Council of Exceptional Children, offers policy advancement and professional development for individuals who work with or on behalf of children with special needs, birth through age eight, and their families.  A recent policy for inclusion co-authored with the National Association for the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC) a position statement on Early Childhood Inclusion.  NAEYC is the world’s largest professional organization serving those who work with or on behalf of young children birth to age 8.
